N-West Urges Broadband Wireless Standards
The National Wireless Electronic Systems Testbed (N-West) will work with a new Industry Standards and Technology Council inside the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to speed the development of standard interfaces for broadband wireless networks. The group will work on common standards for LMDS, the Canadian LMCS, future 38-GHz multipoint radio, and other emerging broadband networks. (TECHWEB)

Nextel Expands National Network through Agreement 
with Nextel Partners, Inc.
Nextel announced that it has entered an agreement with several investors, including Motorola, to extend Nextel's U.S. wireless phone network nationwide. When Nextel provided its second-quarter results last month, it revealed that it would contemplate investing in other wireless companies to aid Nextel in expanding its network and selling phone services under the Nextel name. U.S. Wireless Corp. Signs CDMA Licensing Agreement 
with QUALCOMM
U.S. Wireless has announced a licensing agreement with QUALCOMM allowing it to create a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) version for the company's RadioCamera wireless caller-location system. The agreement stipulates, according to U.S. Wireless, that QUALCOMM will supply the CDMA technology, technical assistance, and access to components and equipment. Each company's technology will be cross-licensed, although terms and conditions still need to be negotiated. U.S. Wireless will acquire a commercial license for wireless location systems, while QUALCOMM will gain a commercial license for integration within its CDMA infrastructure products. Providing wireless caller location data that reinforces E-911 and other enhanced mobile services, the AMPS model of the RadioCamera will provide geolocation data for the IS-95 CDMA standard and will be ready for outdoor field trials by the end of the year. A Congressional Y2K Brigade Hits the Road
The House Subcommittee on Government Management, Information & Technology will hold hearings scheduled in Dallas (Aug. 17), New Orleans (Aug. 19), Cleveland (Sept. 1), Indianapolis (Sept. 2), and Chicago (Sept. 3). The sessions will give local business leaders and government officials an opportunity to express their concerns about possible Y2K problems in interaction between local, state, and federal computer systems. There are More Glitches Ahead After Y2K
Whatever happens with Y2K, other machines with newer, but still problematic, code are silently ticking down to another day-and-date bug that has a deadline a mere few decades later. (WIRED)

InterJetNet Corp. Introduces Wireless Internet Access 
to Orange County, California
The company will first bring its services to Irvine, California because of the region's unique market opportunities. The Irvine area is rapidly growing, especially in the business sector.  InterJetNet already provides wireless Internet access in Salt Lake City, Utah, Houston and Beaumont, Texas.  After Orange County, the company plans to expand throughout the Los Angeles metro region, and as far south as the Mexican border. After full coverage of southern California, IJNT intends to complete its California expansion by extending into the San Francisco Bay area and the northern region of the state.  (YAHOO)

TeleCorp Selects Planet® Software Licenses from MSI 
to Help Plan and Design Digital Wireless Network in U.S. 
Mobile Systems International Americas has sold eight Planet® network design software and service licenses to TeleCorp, for use in building out its U.S. Personal Communications Services (PCS) network.  TeleCorp is one of AT&T Wireless' affiliates with 11million POPS in largely urban markets. TeleCorp will build and operate digital wireless networks in New Orleans, LA; Memphis, TN; Little Rock, AR; and in areas surrounding Boston, MA and St. Louis, MO.  (WOW-COM)

British Railway to Block Use of Wireless Phones
Chiltern Railways of Britain, in response to customers' complaints about loud cell phone users, is planning to install a special metal-coating on glass windows that prevents radio waves from passing through in its carriages.  (WOW-COM)

BCE Inc. Seeks Partner for Global Telecom Dance
BCE Inc., a giant in Canada's telecommunications industry, has been in talks with a number of different parties since the start of the year. There are a number of different types of deals BCE could consider -- a loose alliance, a joint venture or an outright merger -- but analysts would like to see an agreement that involves real money. Satellite Service Could Prove Economic Boost for Latin America
Currently, Latin American businesses have trouble connecting to working phone lines, and often employ multiple phones on desktops to improve their odds. But as privatization breaks up traditional government monopolies, Latin American countries are finding they have access to satellite systems instead of rundown telephone poles and limited lines.  (WIRED)

U S WEST Asks for Mediator's Help in Contentious Union Talks
The negotiations, characterized by union representatives as some of the most difficult in the industry, bogged down over issues such as forced overtime, scheduling and a unique U S WEST performance-pay plan. (FOX NEWS) - (DENVER POST)
