Team Up to Offer the "Internet by Cellular One"
The agreement will enable Cellular One carriers in nearly 400 markets to offer their new and existing wireless customers a full range of Internet access, web site design and hosting services.  The agreement paves the way for the national introduction of "Internet by Cellular One," full Internet connection services under the Cellular One brand. Japan Telecom, Nissan, AirTouch to Set Up Mobile Phone Venture

Wireless Churn Among U.S. Mobile Family Subscribers 
to Cost Operators Nearly $4 Billion, Says Strategy Analytics
In a new report, research firm, Strategy Analytics says 38% of mobile family subscribers are at risk for churn over the next 12 months, representing potential revenue displacement of nearly $4 Billion for the U.S. Cellular/PCS industry. Mobile family subscribers cited poor customer service as a reason for churn twice as often as average subscribers did, the report says. (YAHOO)

Power Integrations Sues Motorola in Patent Dispute
Power Integrations Inc. has sued Motorola Inc. for alleged infringement of two patents related to integrated circuit devices used in cellular telephones and computers.  (YAHOO)

California Microwave Acquires Adaptive Broadband
U.K.-based Adaptive Broadband combines TDMA and ATM technologies to manage bandwidth in an efficient way, which can simultaneously support all types of multimedia traffic: Internet, real-time video, voice and other data. California Microwave will adopt Adaptive's technology to extend its Terrestrial Wireless Division's current narrowband radio products to higher data rates, and from multiple-address to point-to-multipoint applications. Wall Street Views LMDS Cautiously
While bigger LMDS license holders' plans for LMDS spectrum are not essential their corporate strategies or earnings, start-up public companies--such as CellularVision USA, Teligent, and WinStar Communications--rely wholly on their LMDS commercial spectrum operations. (WOW-COM)

Digital Wireless Applications to Help Drive 
Digital Signal Processor Growth
A new report forecasts 32 percent growth for programmable DSP chips in 1999 and a 33 percent compound annual growth rate to 2002, when the programmable DSP market is expected to reach $13.4 billion.  The growth will be fueled by new applications including satellite phones and smart antennas. Will Downsizing the Phones Allow Nextel to Move Upmarket?
Nextel Communications, in a move to attract more professionals, has introduced a palm-sized handset called the i1000 designed by Motorola. (WOW-COM)

Denver Testing Satellite-Assisted Cell Phones
A chip that can be installed for $5 to $8 in new phones sends a signal to a computer that helps a Global Positioning Satellite, or GPS, locate the caller and report the position to within 12 feet.  When a call is made with one of the phones, information shows up in the form of a red dot on a map in a computer at an emergency operator's desk. The map can even show which side of the street a driver is on. (NANDO.NET)

WIC Connexus Selects Newbridge Networks and Alcatel 
for World's Largest LMCS Build-Out 
Newbridge and Alcatel will be equipment suppliers for a $450-$500 million national local multipoint communications infrastructure. Canada's largest advanced, wireless, broadband telecommunications network will be rolled out in all regions of Canada, beginning in Toronto in the first quarter of 1999. (WOW-COM)

SecurFone America, Inc. Announces Strategic Alliance 
with MDI, Inc. and MDI de Mexico
SecurFone America, Inc. founded in 1996, is a telecommunications company specializing in prepaid communications service. Microwave Designs International, Inc. (MDI) is a privately held wireless engineering firm headquartered in Richardson, Texas. Its affiliate MDI de Mexico S.A. de C.V., is headquartered in Monterrey, Mexico.  Under the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding, the parties will work together to develop and deploy new prepaid communications and Internet telephony based services and systems, and provide engineering and technical support services, primarily in overseas markets.  (YAHOO)

AirTouch Passes 20 Million Wireless Customer Mark Overseas
Chairman and chief executive Sam Ginn reported that the company's foreign ventures crossed the 20 million customer mark in July, cementing AirTouch's standing as the world's largest wireless communications provider. With more than 32 million total venture customers in 13 countries, AirTouch and its partners serve more than 10 percent of all the world's wireless subscribers. (YAHOO)

USTA Sues FBI over Digital Wiretap Plans
The United States Telephone Association filed suit Wednesday accusing the FBI of overstepping the boundaries of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 regarding the ability of law enforcement agencies to tap into telephone and other communications lines. Cellular telephone industry groups have filed a similar suit against the FBI and Justice Department. (NANDO.NET)

Cellular services are more likely to function in remote areas but often require long-term contracts. PCS phones are generally less expensive and can send data such as E-mail, stock quotes and news headlines. (WOW-COM)

Goldman Sachs Sees Millennium Bug Stinging U.S. Economy
Two Goldman Sachs economists, Ed McKelvey and Alex Patelis, report that the date change could disrupt the economy in the first few weeks after the turn of the century, but companies would compensate, working overtime to fix computer bugs. (YAHOO)

American Mobile Expands Senior Management Team
The appointments are Michael McGee to vice president of marketing, Michael Woodruff to vice president of technology and operations, Dennis Matheson to vice president of engineering and advanced technologies, Tom Bowen to vice president of operations, and Michael Fabbri to vice president of corporate accounts.
