Wheeler Calls for United Effort to Implement Enhanced 9-1-1 Calls from Wireless Phones
The head of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association today called on the public safety communications community to reactivate the coalition that drafted the blueprint for improved 9-1-1 communications in order to make that blueprint a reality. (WOW-COM)

U.S. Wireless Presents "Real Time" Live Multiple-Cities Trials 
of Its RadioCamera Wireless Caller-Location Technology 
at CTIA Conference
The trials simultaneously demonstrated the Company's wireless caller location and tracking technology in three cities across the country, including: Baltimore, Maryland; Oakland, California and Billings, Montana. The trials demonstrated caller detection and location processing for multiple calls simultaneously, using multiple sites at each location, resulting with the location and tracking of all calls on a Company developed mapping display. U S WEST, XYPOINT Deploy Real-Time Wireless E9-1-1 
Database Interconnections Throughout 14 States
This network interconnection will allow XYPOINT to update the U S WEST E9-1-1 databases with the 10-digit callback number and location information associated with a wireless subscriber's call to 9-1-1. This information will then be available for retrieval and display at the emergency dispatch center, or public safety answering point (PSAP), handling the 9-1-1 call. (WOW-COM)

Handheld Maker Plans to Undercut PalmPilot
Royal Consumer Business Products is planning to take a bite out of 3Com's PalmPilot business with the daVinci handheld device, introduced Monday, that mirrors the PalmPilot's appearance and functionality, but costs about 50 percent less. (TECHWEB)

Ericsson, Smart Modular Technologies Join to Bring GSM 
to Mobile Computing
Smart Modular will sell a line of PC cards that will not only support wireless networks based on GSM, but will also run fax and data operations, such as 56-kilobit-per-second systems and ISDN. (TECHWEB)

Mundelein, Ill. High School District 120 Board Pulls Plug on Bid 
for Antenna Site
The school district board rejected Sprint's request for a 140-foot tower on school property.  The board president said that in his 19 years on the board, he had never received more calls or comments in opposition to a proposal.  The opposing views were based on safety, aesthetics, and that the school should not be involved in a purely commercial venture. Lemont, Ill., Grants Nextel Long Term Lease for Antenna Site 
on Water Tower
The village board approved a 20-year lease at $1,500 a month for an initial five-year term with an option for a second term of 15 years. (CHICAGO TRIBUNE)

Bloomingdale, Ill. Trustees OK Shorter Antenna after AT&T Sues
The trustees approved a plan permitting a 155-foot monopole to hold communication antennas and a 200-square-foot equipment building. AT&T will build on leased property in an area zoned as a business park.  AT&T had requested a 196-foot tower. (CHICAGO TRIBUNE)

Vermont Environmental Board Revokes Antenna Site Permit
The revocation statement says Bell Atlantic violated permit conditions dealing with the 178-foot tower's visibility. One of the conditions says: "The forestland provides partial screening for the tower. The tree line shall be maintained to shield the lower half of the tower.''  Bell Atlantic won permission in 1996 to build the tower on Baxter Mountain. (BOSTON GLOBE)

Rockwell Semiconductor Introduces Its First Chipset 
for CDMA Phones
According to Rockwell, the chipset is the first complete, integrated radio frequency (RF) subsystem for CDMA and CDMA Personal Communications System (PCS) digital cellular phones with support for Advanced Mobile Phone Systems (AMPS) analog cellular service. (YAHOO)

Shrinking Wireless Phones Are Getting Incredibly Smaller
Since 1990, the mean weight of wireless phones has decreased from 14.9 ounces to 7.4 ounces. Companies such as Motorola, Ericsson, Nextel, and Nokia are developing phones that weigh between 3.1 ounces to 4.9 ounces. NTT has developed the world's smallest wireless phone--a wristwatch phone that weighs 1.58 ounces. (DALLAS MORNING NEWS)

Former Alamance County, N.C. Policeman Sentenced 
on Wiretapping Charge
Former Alamance County, N.C., police officer Joel Dean Ward was sentenced in a U.S. Middle District Court on Monday after pleading guilty to charges that he unlawfully intercepted cellular phone conversations. (GREENSBORO NEWS & RECORD)

Pioneer to Sell Car Navigation System in U.S., Europe
The system -- available in English, German and French versions -- will be marketed mainly in the U.S. states of California, Florida and Washington as well as in Germany and France. (NIKKEI NET)

Germany to Launch Wireless Local Loop Phone Networks
The German government's telecommunications agency plans to issue licenses for a new generation of wireless technology for local phone services aimed at increasing competition with Deutsche Telekom. The first licenses would be awarded in October for point-to-multipoint (PMP) services in one of the broadest rollouts of the new technology worldwide. (NEWS.COM)

Canada's Newbridge Meets Profit Estimates, Adds Deal
Computer networking firm Newbridge Networks Corp. posted earnings on Tuesday that equaled street predictions and unveiled a US$300 million, 3-year deal with SBC Communications Inc. (YAHOO)

Nokia to Supply GSM Network Expansion in Beijing, China
Nokia will deliver GSM 900 and GSM 1800 equipment including its mobile switching centers (MSC), home location registers (HLR), base station controllers (BSC) and base stations. The value of the contract is US$56 million. Deliveries will begin in September and the network additions are expected to be operational at the end of this year. (YAHOO
