None of the Chinese who suffered from these actions are alive today.

None of the Westerners who plotted or benefitted from these actions are
alive today.

So why care? (It would be hard to claim that modern China is in any way a
*victim*, rather than a *practitioner*, of imperialism!)

The idea that 'nations' or 'peoples' have a consciousness transcending the
individuals who compose them is the source of most historical strife. (See
Bosnia or the Middle East)
